Travel and accommodation

Travel
While choosing an event it always worth checking where the event is. It is common for congoers to travel across the country for events. Nottingham to Derby, Shropshire to Leicester, Glasgow to London.

The most common way to travel to event is by train. Get your friends together and decide on the best time on the day of arrival to meet up at your local nearest train station!

Some venues may require a taxi journey so make sure to find out how to catch one! It will be wise to bring a map and some suitable phone numbers for if you get lost on the way. If you can, travel with someone who is familiar with the route.

It would be worth doing your homework about what shops are nearby; is it a University convention that is out of the way or is it a hotel snug right in the middle of a town? If the venue allows it then it may be worth finding out a few phone numbers for take out.

Accommodation
If you live more than 20 minutes drive away from the venue then it is strongly recommended that you book a hotel room. Ideally this should be as close to the convention as possible. If you like convenience then I recommend staying onsite, basically the nearest place to stay to the event. Sometimes it could be cheaper to stay a little farther away but you will lose convenience as you may be drinking or you might have brought alot of stuff from the dealers room. It is totally up to you where to stay but be sure to weigh up the pros and cons for each place to stay at!

Some conventions are set in Universities so instead of staying in a hotel you may end up in student accommodation.

Always check the convention's website and forums before booking anything. They will give you all the details you will need to know.

How do I get a room?

If you plan to stay at the venue the convention is held at there could be a chance that there could be a discount. Make sure you find out that this is happening and follow the instructions according to the website. Normally hotel bookings are done online and you just need to fill in a simple form. Be sure to find out whether you will need to pay a deposit for the room while you book but hotels would often allow you to pay on the day.

You will just need to find out the nights you will be staying and perhaps your card details. If you are unsure about anything at any stage or want to have a confirmation by voice there is no need to hesitate contracting the hotel via phone.

PRO TIPS
  • Be sure to pair up with a friend and book a double/twin room as you can split the costs. In this case only 1 person will need to book the room.
  • Book as soon as possible to secure a room as rooms will often fill up due to limited places.
  • Unless you don't plan to drink or likely to be short on cash, it is better to spend extra to be close to be as close to the venue as possible.
  • Avoid sharing with complete strangers if possible. Friends of friends are usually fine.
  • If there is a free breakfast, make sure you take advantage of that. You will need the energy.
