Resin casting and craft clays

Costume with painted Fimo clay
Some costumes require this extra sparkle or shine. They might be 3D and has this razzle dazzle about them. A first step is in the form of lightweight clays.

Sculpey and Fimo clays can be brought on-line and in craft stores and can be manipulated with various tools such as pointers. Once shaped they can be heated in the oven at a low heat for 20 minutes and become rock hard when cool. If it needs more time it will still be soft and if burnt it will become toxic.

Crayola Model Magic and Air dry clay can also be manipulated with various tools but because they air dry great care must be considered when putting the rest away. Paperclay can either be brought or home made for cheap using good old bog roll.

Both oven and air dry clays can be painted and varnished. Like any other surface, 3+ layers of paint may be needed for a matte finish and old school PVA glue will be more than enough to varnish it at the end.

If you want something more challenging and sparkly then you might want to consider resin casting. Resin catsing is ideal if you want to make gems.

Hobbyists may use an Epoxy resin. They are low in toxicity and safe to use at home. They come in 2 parts: a resin and a hardener and must be used in the correct ratio to be cured properly. Dyes can be added during the mixing process and a variety of moulds can be used. Glitters and small images can complete the look!

Due to the time it may take and the ratios it may be worth playing around with it before doing any major projects. They also make fabulous gifts!
